Event: Campus Lohri Celebration

Lohri was celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm on 13 January in our community. Lohri is a popular festival of Punjab and marks the end of winter and the arrival of longer days. The celebration began in the evening with students and teachers gathering in the playground.

A bonfire was lit, and everyone went around it while offering peanuts, popcorn, rewri, and sweets to the fire. Traditional Punjabi songs were sung, and students performed energetic Bhangra and Gidda dances, which added colour and excitement to the event. The atmosphere was full of happiness and cultural pride.

The importance of Lohri and its connection with farmers and harvest was explained through a short speech. The celebration helped everyone understand Punjabi culture and traditions better. The programme ended with distribution of prasad and sweets.

Overall, the Lohri celebration was memorable and enjoyable for everyone.

Introduction & Significance

Lohri is a traditional Punjabi harvest festival celebrated annually in mid-January to mark the end of winter, express gratitude for the winter crops, and welcome longer days. The festival typically involves a bonfire, traditional music, folk dances, and festive foods such as peanuts, popcorn, and jaggery. It is a culturally rich event fostering togetherness, gratitude, and joy among participants.

Celebration Overview at Global College

The Global College of Engineering and Technology campus commemorated Lohri with great enthusiasm and festive spirit:

  • Bonfire Ritual:

A ceremonial bonfire was lit on campus grounds, symbolizing warmth, prosperity, and the traditional spirit of Lohri. Students, faculty, and staff gathered around to partake in traditional rituals and offerings, such as tossing til (sesame), moongfali (groundnuts), rewari and popcorn into the fire, following the cultural custom.

  • Delicacies & Festive Treats:

As part of the celebrations, customary foods associated with Lohri — such as rewari, gajak, groundnuts and popcorn — were offered to the fire and distributed among participants, strengthening communal bonds and adding to the joy of the occasion.

Cultural Importance in an Educational Setting

Organizing Lohri on campus not only allows students to enjoy festive traditions, but also helps:

  • Promote Cultural Awareness:

Students learn and participate in age-old Punjabi traditions, preserving cultural heritage within a modern educational setting.

  • Encourage Community Spirit:

Events like this strengthen bonds between students, faculty, and staff, fostering a supportive and inclusive campus culture.

  • Reflect Institutional Values:

By celebrating national and regional festivals like Lohri, the college demonstrates its commitment to cultural diversity, unity, and holistic student experiences.

Conclusion

The Lohri celebration at Global College of Engineering and Technology was marked by warmth, tradition, and enthusiastic participation from the entire college community. Through music, dance, food, and shared festivities, the event successfully honoured the cultural essence of Lohri — celebrating harvest, gratitude, togetherness, and the promise of brighter days ahead.
